Steps Forward Programme

Building confidence. Developing independence. Preparing for adulthood.

The right support can make a real difference to how a young person approaches everyday life and their future. At Stride , our personalised Steps Forward programme helps young people develop the confidence, practical skills and experience they need to take their next steps towards adulthood.

Delivered through one-to-one support from a dedicated Progression Coach, the programme focuses on each individual’s needs, interests and aspirations, helping them make meaningful progress at their own pace.

From developing communication and social skills to building confidence with everyday tasks, managing money, travelling independently and exploring future employment opportunities, support is tailored to help each young person work towards their own goals.

Our aim is to help young people build greater independence, recognise their strengths and feel more prepared for the opportunities and challenges that come with adult life.

Personalised support that works in real life

Every young person has different strengths, challenges and goals. That’s why our programme is built around the individual, with practical support that reflects their everyday life and what they want to achieve.

Participants typically receive 10–16 hours of support each week, delivered by a dedicated Progression Coach across community, home and social settings.

Rather than focusing solely on classroom-based learning, we use everyday experiences and real-world activities to help young people build skills they can put into practice with growing confidence.

One-to-one support from a dedicated Progression Coach

Support is shaped around the individual, taking into account their needs, interests, strengths and aspirations. As confidence grows, the focus is on helping them apply what they’ve learnt in different situations and develop greater independence over time.

The aim is not simply to complete activities, but to help each young person build the skills and confidence to use beyond their sessions.

Supporting the next step

Progress looks different for everyone. For some young people, it might mean feeling more confident travelling independently or managing everyday tasks. For others, it could mean exploring further education, accessing training, volunteering or preparing for employment.

Each programme is shaped around meaningful individual outcomes, helping young people move towards a future that reflects their interests, ambitions and potential.

Our focus is on building the foundations for a more independent and fulfilling adulthood.
