What Are Coping Strategy Sessions?

Coping strategy sessions are designed to support employed individuals who are struggling to cope at work due to neurodivergence or mental health-related barriers. The focus is on understanding the challenges you face in your working life and developing practical strategies to help you manage them more effectively.

These sessions are particularly helpful for people who feel overwhelmed, burnt out, anxious, or stuck in patterns that make work harder than it needs to be. Rather than focusing on diagnosis or labels, coping strategy sessions concentrate on real-life challenges and what will genuinely help you cope better at work and in everyday life.

Our coping strategy sessions support employed individuals and workplaces across the UK, with sessions delivered online or in person depending on need.

If you’d like a broader explanation, you can also read our guide on what coping strategy sessions are and how they support neurodivergent adults.

A Practical, Structured Approach – Not Therapy

Our coping strategy sessions are led by our Head of Coaching, a qualified Occupational Therapist, and delivered using a structured, practical, and outcomes-focused approach.

While the sessions are therapeutic in nature, this is not therapy. Instead, the emphasis is on identifying real-world solutions that can be applied immediately. The aim is to help you understand what is making work difficult and to develop strategies that fit your role, your environment, and your individual needs.

The focus is on workplace coping strategies, functional skills, and practical adjustments rather than clinical treatment or diagnosis.

This approach makes coping strategy sessions especially suitable for people who want practical support they can use straight away, rather than open-ended or clinical interventions.

What Happens in a Coping Strategy Session?

Your first session – understanding your needs

Your first coping strategy session is focused on getting to know you. During this session, we’ll explore your current challenges, discuss how work is affecting you, and identify the areas where you feel you are struggling to cope.

Together, we’ll assess your needs and agree on a clear, personalised plan for the sessions ahead. This ensures that support is tailored from the very beginning and focused on what matters most to you.

For a more detailed breakdown, you can read about what happens in a coping strategy session.

Ongoing sessions – developing practical coping strategies

The remaining sessions (up to 12 in total) can be used flexibly over a 12-month period. Each session focuses on one or more specific difficulties you’re experiencing, with time dedicated to developing and refining practical coping strategies.

Sessions are paced to suit you and can adapt over time as your circumstances or challenges change. The emphasis remains on strategies that are realistic, sustainable, and relevant to your working life.

What Challenges Can Coping Strategy Sessions Help With?

Coping strategy sessions are designed to address a wide range of workplace and everyday challenges. While every programme is personalised, common areas of support include:

  • Managing sensory overload and workplace overwhelm
  • Building routines, structure, and effective time management
  • Coping with stress, anxiety, and emotional regulation
  • Improving focus, organisation, and task prioritisation
  • Developing effective communication and boundary-setting at work
  • Preventing burnout and managing energy levels
  • Adapting your working environment through practical strategies and reasonable adjustments

The focus is always on identifying strategies that work for you, rather than applying generic advice.

Tailored Support That Fits Around Your Job

Every coping strategy session is tailored to the individual. Support is shaped around your role, your working environment, and the demands you face day to day.

There is a strong emphasis on practicality and sustainability. Strategies are designed to fit around your job, rather than requiring unrealistic changes or additional pressure. This makes coping strategy sessions particularly effective for people who want support that works in real working conditions.

Who Are Coping Strategy Sessions Suitable For?

Coping strategy sessions are suitable for employed individuals who are struggling to cope at work due to neurodivergence, mental health-related barriers, or ongoing stress and overwhelm.

You do not need a formal diagnosis to access support. Sessions focus on your experiences and needs, making them accessible to people who may not have a diagnosis or who prefer not to disclose one in the workplace.

Sessions can be delivered online or in person and are available to individuals and workplaces across the UK.

Supporting Confidence, Control, and Long-Term Coping

The aim of coping strategy sessions is simple – to help you feel more in control, more confident, and better equipped to cope at work both now and in the long term.

By focusing on practical strategies and sustainable change, coping strategy sessions support you to manage challenges more effectively, reduce overwhelm, and build coping tools that can be used well beyond the sessions themselves.

Employers may also want to understand how to support neurodivergent employees in the workplace with coping strategy sessions by learning about session structure, eligibility, and delivery.

For employers, these sessions can also form part of a wider approach to workplace wellbeing and inclusive support for neurodivergent employees.

Testimonials

What has really stood out to me, compared to other support services is they genuinely care. It's not just a job. they're passionate about making a difference and didn't give up on me, even at low times, when I'd lost faith in myself. I will be forever grateful that stride became involved in my care and grateful to all stride workers, but especially Logan for the dedication and genuinely caring. Dan
I was very sceptical about starting my work with Stride, I struggled to trust professionals after past experiences. I can’t begin to list the ways that Stride have helped me, I feel like my life is back on track, and I know that I have all the support needed to get me to where I need to go in life. University finally feels like it might be a realistic goal. I am so grateful for everything! Brandon
I have had the pleasure of working with Stride Yorkshire in my journey to becoming a more inclusive employer. I knew I wanted to give adults with Autism a chance at working but was worried about my ability to support them. I was fearful of saying the wrong things, how they may manage criticism etc. Stride placed two fantastic candidates in my workplace as admin assistants, and I felt supported through the entire process, the job coaching was amazing, they took the pressure off massively from an employer’s perspective. By the time the support from Stride had finished, our eyes had been opened to the hidden ABILITIES of adults with social and learning conditions, both candidates had their own strengths, and struggles (which we knew how to support). If you are considering becoming more inclusive, and giving somebody a chance that might otherwise be overlooked, I would urge you to get in contact with Stride! Dot – Trador Print Ltd
I’ve been coming to Stride for the past couple of months and have been in the care of Logan. I’m autistic and since I left school, I’ve been lost, I don’t know what I want to do with myself, job wise and career wise, I failed in college I’ve been suffering with mental health including intrusive and obsessive thoughts brought upon by pure O, along with anxiety and depression and I didn’t have any friends after being rejected and bullied by peers time and time again. It’s been a struggle, but since I’ve been having my meetings with Logan weekly, he’s really helped me, I’m already seeing a difference, he is someone I can talk to about my mental health and help me in my recovery journey, he’s helping me come up with ideas for what kind of job I’d like and he’s introduced me to people I have common ground with and have developed friendships with. We’ve done a lot in a short time and we’ve only just begun, I feel like I’ve got a long way to go in my mental health recovery journey yet, but if anyone’s gonna get me there, it’s Logan. Adam
